Newlands Arm History

Newlands Arm, located in the Shire of East Gippsland, Victoria, Australia, is a charming residential area with a rich history and a strong sense of community. The village is situated along the coastal edge of the Gippsland Lakes, south of Paynesville. It began its development in 1961 when Willmore and Randell Pty Ltd marketed it as an 814-lot subdivision over 68 hectares. Initially, growth was slow; a 1977 planning study recorded only four dwellings. However, by 2011, the census recorded 279 houses, with a significant portion occupied by retirees, reflected in the median age of 59 years compared to the national average of 37 years.

The area’s development continued steadily, with the community maintaining a peaceful, country atmosphere. Newlands Arm is known for its natural beauty, particularly around Newlands Backwater, which is popular for water skiing and has safe swimming areas, boat ramps, and recreational facilities. The community is active, with a modern community hall hosting various events and activities, including yoga, indoor bowls and social clubs.

Newlands Arm has about 748 residents and features essential services such as a CFA station. The area is appreciated for its tranquility, clean environment, and the scenic views of the lakes. It offers a safe and friendly environment for families and retirees alike, contributing to its appeal as a desirable place to live.
